Here is a step by step guide to filing your tax return by uploading your Form 16.
Form 16 is a certificate issued by an employer to his employee. It certifies that TDS has been deducted from your salary by the employer. If an employer deducts TDS on salary, he must issue income tax Form 16 as per the Income-tax rules.
Steps on how to upload Form 16 and file Income-tax return:
Step 1: Visit myitreturn.com
Upload Form 16

Step 2: You will be asked to upload your Form 16.

Click on the "Upload Form-16 PDF" button.
Step 3: Browse the Form 16 PDF file and click on open to upload Form 16.

Step 4: On successful upload, the below popup will be shown

Click Okay to proceed.
Step 5: You will be asked to log in

Log in if you are an existing user or Click on Sign up here to create your account.
Step 6: Check uploaded Form-16
Check and complete uploaded Form-16.

Step 7: Click on Continue after checking Form-16

Step 8: Recheck imported details.
Recheck the imported summary and click on Next

Step 9: Enter Personal Details

You need to enter some details such as Date of birth, Father's name, Mobile Number etc. as the same is not available in Form 16. Click on Submit button once details are entered.
Step 10: Click on your name to Continue

Step 11: Click on Continue Self-Filing. In case you wish to switch to Assisted Services you can switch from here.

Step 12: Income-tax Summary
You will be shown a summary of your imported Form16. If you have another Form 16 Click Yes otherwise Click No.

Check your summary and click "Continue" on the bottom page.
Step 13: Residential Status
Select whether you are an Indian Resident, Non-Resident Indian (NRI), or Not Ordinary Resident (NOR).

In case you are confused about what your residential status should be, then you may select the "Help me decide" option.
You need to answer some simple questions that will decide your residential status for Financial Year for which the return is being filed.
Step 14: Type of Return

Select the type of return as "New/ Original" if the return you are filing is the Original (New) Return.
In case you already have filed a return for this Financial Year and want to revise the same, then you need to select return type as "Revised". In such a case, you also need to provide the ITR-V Acknowledgement Number of the Original Return.
Step 15: Proceed to file the return.
In case you have other incomes such as rent, bank interest, FD interest, etc. you need to select the option "Start Easy Tax Questions". You will be continued with filing questions for other income.
If you don't have any income other than Salary, then you may proceed by clicking on "Review and File".
Step 16: Update contact details
Before the filing of the return, you need to update your contact details. These details are mandatory to be provided as they will be used during any correspondence by the Income-tax department with you.

Step 17: Bank details
You need to provide details of all the Savings and Current Accounts in India.
Click on "+Add Bank Details" to add bank account details.
After adding the bank accounts, Click on Next to continue.

Please note that in case any Bank Account has not been in operation for more than 3 years, then details of such dormant Bank Accounts are not required to be provided.
Also, you need to select any one Bank Account as a "Primary Account". Refunds, if any, will be credited into this Bank Account. If you have entered only one account, then the same will be treated as your Primary Account.
Step 18: Final Summary
You will be shown the final summary of your return. Click on Continue.

Step 19: Return type

Select the type of return as "New/ Original" if the return you are filing is the Original (New) Return.
In case you already have filed a return for this Financial Year and want to revise the same, then you need to select return type as "Revised". In such a case, you also need to provide the ITR-V Acknowledgement Number of the Original Return.
Step 20: Payment of fees and filing of return

The last step will be the payment of filing fees. The software will automatically generate fees as per the plan applicable to you, such as Non-resident Plan (if you are non-resident), Professional Plan (if you are having business income) and so on.
Since, in this case, you are having only salary income, you need to pay some nominal filing fees. Your return will get filed automatically at the moment you make payment of filing fees.
You can make payment by any mode viz.
- Credit/ debit card.
- Net-banking.
Once the Amount is paid, your return will be in the filing queue. Once the same is filed, you will receive ITR-V Acknowledgement on your Email account.
