What’s the big deal in entering the name correct in your Income-tax return. Well, many a times, it happens that Income-tax return does not get through, just because of incorrect name. Wrong name does not only mean wrong spelling, it means that name in the Income-tax return should match with the name provided on your PAN card. From AY 15-16, Income-tax department has started validating the names of the assessees against their PAN database. The name on the Income-tax return should be in the same order as it is on the PAN, viz. Name, Middle name, Surname.
Earlier, it was possible to file the return, with different sequence in name on the Income-tax return than that on the PAN card but not anymore. For instance- If the name as per PAN card is “Ramesh Keshavbhai Desai” however the name in the Income-tax return is “Ramesh Keshav Desai”, then it is not accepted anymore. The name should match exactly. If name provided on PAN card is only one, then provide the same name as last name in your Income-tax return while filing through myITreturn.com. Also make sure that the date of birth entered is correct.
If changes need to be made in the name or date of birth on PAN card, just submit a PAN Change Request Form (quote your existing PAN) with correction details and provide documents at any TIN facilitation centre. In case of women, after marriage, if they want to change their name on their PAN, they can do so by opting for a PAN change request form. After such a change is done on your PAN, do not forget to use the rectified name.
