How to file your Income-tax return using Income-tax Department's website?

There are two ways to file the Income-tax return using Income-tax Department's website:

(I) Offline Method:

Filing the Income-tax return by downloading Excel or Java Utility available on website.

(II) Online Method:

Filing the Income-tax return by entering data directly on the e-filing portal and submit it.

Below are the detailed steps for filing the Income-tax returns using Department's website:

(I) Offline Method

1. Go to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
2. Go to "Downloads (below login button) >> Offline Utilities >> Income Tax Return Preparation Utilities"
3. Select the appropriate ITR form depending upon the type of income. ITR Forms are available in Excel and Java utility. You can use any one utility based on your preference. Click on Download link available under Excel and Java utility.
4. The ITR form will be downloaded in ZIP file. Extract the same.
5. Enter the details in the ITR Form. Enter all the mandatory details.
6. Validate all the sheets and calculate tax
7. Click on "Generate XML"
8. Click on "Save XML" to save the XML file at your desired location.
9. Login to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
10. Go to "e-File >> Income Tax Return
11. Select the "Assessment Year"
12. Select "ITR Form Name"
13. Under "Submission Mode" select, "Upload XML"
14. Choose any one option to verify the return
15. Click on "Continue"
16. Attach the XML File
17. Verify the return as per option chosen in point "m"
18. The return will be submitted and you will receive an Email confirming the same.

(II) Online Method

1. Go to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
2. Go to "e-file >> Income Tax" 
3. Select Assessment Year
4. Select ITR Form
5. Under "Submission Mode" select "Prepare and Submit Online"
6. Choose any one option to verify the return
7. Enter the details in ITR Form
8. Click on "Save as Draft"
9. Click on "Preview and Submit" to preview the return before submitting
10. Click on "Submit"
11. Verify the return as per option chosen in point "m"
12. The return will be submitted and you will receive an Email confirming the same.
