Is Aadhaar compulsory for filing tax return?

As per the amendment in Finance Act 2017, the Government of India has made it mandatory to quote Aadhaar number in the Income-tax return to be filed on or after 1st July 2017. For filing of return before 1st July 2017, even though Aadhaar number is not mandatorily required to be quoted in Income-tax return, it is advisable to update the Aadhaar number with the Income-tax Department, since the Income-tax Department has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar details with PAN details in Income-tax records.
