Here is a step by step guide to file your tax return by uploading your Form 16.
In case you are earning salary and you have no other sources of income like Fixed deposit interest, house rent, capital gains from sale of property, shares, etc., then myITreturn has provided user-friendly feature called "Form 16 Upload". In this feature, you just need to Upload your Form 16 and all other things will be taken care of by myITreturn.
Form 16 is a certificate issued by employer to his employee. It certifies that TDS has been deducted on your salary by the employer. If an employer deducts TDS on salary, he must issue income tax Form 16 as per the Income-tax rules.

Steps on how to upload Form 16 and file Income-tax return:
Step 1: Visit myitreturn.com
There are 2 options provided viz.
- Upload your Form 16,
- Start your tax return.
Click on the 1st option - "Upload your Form 16".
Step 2: You will be asked to upload your Form 16.
Click on "Upload Form-16 PDF" button.
Step 3: Browse the Form 16 PDF file and click on open to upload Form 16.
Step 4: On successful upload, below popup will be shown
Click OK to proceed.
Step 5: You will be asked to Login.
Login if you are existing user Or Click on New User to create your account.
Step 6: Personal details.
Once you logged in, you need to confirm your personal details which are automatically fetched using your Form 16.
You need to enter some details such as Date of birth, Father's name, Mobile Number etc. as the same are not available in Form 16. Click on Submit button once details are entered.
Step 7: Summary showing computation of income.
On the basis of Form 16 uploaded, software will automatically fetch the salary details as well as details of tax saving deductions such as life insurance premium, mediclaim, contribution to PPF, donations to charitable trusts, etc.
You need to cross-verify the tax computation with your Form 16. If everything is correct, you may proceed for next to Residential Status.
Step 8: Residential status.
Select whether you are Indian Resident, Non Resident Indian (NRI) or Not Ordinary Resident (NOR).
In case you are confused about what your residential status should be, then you may select "Help me decide" option.
You need to answer some simple questions that will decide your residential status for Financial Year for which return is being filed.
Step 9: Proceed to filing of return.
In case you have other incomes such as rent, bank interest, FD interest, etc. you need to select the option "Start Easy Tax Questions". You will be continued with filing questions for other income.
If you don't have any income other than Salary, then you may proceed by clicking on "Review and File".
Step 10: Update contact details.
Before filing of return, you need to update your contact details. These details are mandatory to be provided as it will be used during any correspondence by Income-tax department with you.
Step 11: Bank details.
You need to provide details of all the Savings and Current Accounts in India.
Click on "+Add Bank Details" to add bank account details.
After adding the bank accounts, Click on Next to continue.
Please note that, in case any Bank Account has not been in operation for more than 3 years, then details of such dormant Bank Account are not required to be provided.
Also, you need to select any one Bank Account as "Primary Account". Refund, if any will be credited into this Bank Account. If you have entered only one Account, then the same will be treated as your Primary Account.
Step 12: Final Summary
You will be shown the final summary of your return.
Step 13: Return type.
Select the type of return as "New/ Original" if the return you are filing is the Original (New) Return.
In case you already have filed return for this Financial Year and want to revise the same, then you need to select return type as "Revised". In such case, you also need to provide ITR-V Acknowledgement Number of the Original Return.
Step 14: Payment of fees and filing of return.
Last step will be payment of filing fees. Software will automatically generate fees as per the plan applicable to you such as Non-resident Plan (if you are non-resident), Professional Plan (if you are having business income) and so on.
Since, in this case, you are having only salary income, you need to pay some nominal filing fees. Your return will get filed automatically at the moment you make payment of filing fees.
You can make payment by any mode viz.
- Credit/ debit card.
- Net-banking.
- Cheque.
Once Amount is paid, your return will be in filing queue. Once same is filed, you will receive ITR-V Acknowledgement on your Email account.
