To access the Income Tax Department's e-Filing services and file your Income Tax Return directly through the portal, you should first register yourself as a taxpayer on the e-Filing portal.
Registration is generally a one-time process. Once registered, you can use your PAN as your User ID to access various services available on the Income Tax e-Filing portal.

Steps to Register on the Income Tax e-Filing Portal
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal
Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal homepage and click Register.
Step 2: Enter and Validate your PAN
Under Register as a Taxpayer, enter your PAN and click Validate.
If the PAN is invalid or is already registered on the e-Filing portal, the portal will display an appropriate message.
Where PAN and Aadhaar are linked, the portal may display a confirmation message asking you to allow validation of the relevant details with the UIDAI database. Select the confirmation checkbox, where displayed, and proceed.
Step 3: Enter your Basic Details
On the Basic Details page, enter the mandatory information as applicable, including:
- Name
- Date of Birth / Date of Incorporation
- Gender, where applicable
- Residential Status
Ensure that the details entered are consistent with your PAN records. After completing the details, click Continue.
Step 4: Enter your Contact Details
After your PAN is validated, the Contact Details page will be displayed.
Enter the required contact information, including:
- Primary mobile number
- Email ID
- Residential address
Check the information carefully and click Continue.
Step 5: Verify your Mobile Number and Email ID using OTP
Separate 6-digit OTPs will be sent to the primary mobile number and email ID entered during registration.
Enter the respective OTPs received on your mobile number and email ID and click Continue.
Step 6: Review and Confirm your Details
Once the OTP verification is complete, review the details displayed on the screen.
If any editable information needs correction, update it before proceeding. Once the details are correct, click Confirm.
Step 7: Set your e-Filing Password
On the Set Password page, create a password for your e-Filing account.
Enter the password in both the Set Password and Confirm Password fields.
You will also be required to enter a Personalized Message. This message acts as a security feature and helps you identify the authentic Income Tax e-Filing login process.
After completing these details, click Register.
Password requirements:
- The password should contain at least 8 and not more than 14 characters.
- It should contain both uppercase and lowercase letters.
- It should contain at least one number.
- It should contain at least one special character.
Note: Avoid clicking the browser's Refresh or Back button while completing the password registration process.
Step 8: Registration Completed
Once the registration is successful, a confirmation message will appear on the screen.
Click Proceed to Login to access your Income Tax e-Filing account.

For an individual taxpayer, the PAN generally acts as the User ID for logging in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
What if your PAN is already Registered?
If the portal shows that your PAN is already registered, you do not need to create another account. You can proceed to the login page.
