Unable to complete your ITR filing?
Filing your Income-tax Return is not complete until the return is successfully verified. If you selected the option to verify your return later, you can complete the e-Verification process through your myITreturn account.
Follow the steps below to e-Verify your filed return using Aadhaar OTP or another available verification method.
Complete verification within the permitted time
A filed Income-tax Return should ordinarily be e-Verified within 30 days from the date of filing. An unverified return may be treated as invalid. Complete the process as soon as possible after filing.
Before You Begin
For Aadhaar OTP verification, ensure that:
- Your PAN is linked with Aadhaar.
- Your current mobile number is linked with Aadhaar.
- You have access to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Your Income-tax Return has already been successfully filed.
Steps to e-Verify Your Income-tax Return
Step 1: Log in to myITreturn
Visit myITreturn and log in to your account using your registered credentials.
Step 2: Open Your Income-tax Return
Click the Start Now button displayed on the File your Income-tax Return card.
Step 3: Select the Taxpayer
Select the name of the taxpayer whose filed return you want to verify.
If more than one taxpayer or family member is available in the account, make sure you select the correct name before proceeding.
Step 4: Click the Verify ITR Button
Locate the filed return that is pending verification and click the Verify ITR button.
Before continuing, check that the Assessment Year and taxpayer details shown on the screen are correct.
Step 5: Select an e-Verification Method
Select Aadhaar OTP to verify the return using the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar.
Where available, you may also select another verification method, such as an Electronic Verification Code through a pre-validated bank account or demat account, Net Banking or Digital Signature Certificate.
Step 6: Enter the Aadhaar OTP
Agree to validate your Aadhaar details and request the OTP. A six-digit OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar.
Enter the OTP in the field provided and click Validate or Continue, as displayed on the screen.
Keep your OTP confidential
Do not share your Aadhaar OTP, password or other login credentials with anyone. Enter the OTP only on the secure verification screen.
Step 7: Confirm Successful e-Verification
After the OTP is successfully validated, a confirmation message and transaction ID should appear on the screen.
Save the confirmation for your records. You may also check the return status to ensure that it shows Successfully e-Verified or another corresponding verified status.
Your return is now verified
Once the successful verification message appears, no signed physical ITR-V needs to be sent for that return. Keep the acknowledgement and transaction details for future reference.
What If You Do Not Receive the Aadhaar OTP?
- Confirm that your PAN is linked with Aadhaar.
- Check whether the mobile number linked with Aadhaar is active.
- Wait briefly and use the option to resend the OTP.
- Enter the latest OTP received, as requesting another OTP may replace the earlier one.
- Use another available e-Verification method if Aadhaar OTP verification does not work.
What If the Verification Time Limit Has Expired?
If the return is not verified within the applicable time limit, the return may be treated as invalid or the date of delayed verification may be considered the filing date, depending on the circumstances.
The Income Tax e-Filing portal may require you to submit a request explaining the reason for the delay. Acceptance of a delayed-verification request is subject to the applicable Income Tax Department procedure.
