This is a provision rolled out by the Income-tax Department. The requirement of "add client" for filing typically applies to situations where someone is filing on behalf of another person. Here's why it's important:
Authorisation: Adding a client establishes a clear authorisation for the person/ERI filing (preparer) to act on behalf of the person whose information is being filed (client). This ensures the client is aware of the filing and approves the preparer's actions.
Security: By adding a client, the tax filing system can verify the preparer has permission to access the client's information such as personal details, financial details etc. This helps protect sensitive financial data.
Record Keeping: Adding a client creates a record of who filed what on whose behalf. This can be helpful for future reference or audits.
Upon successfully being added (verified) as a client, the client will be authorising us (ERI) to undertake the following actions on his behalf:
- View and File Income Tax Forms
- View Rectification Status and Submit Rectification Request
- View Tax Credit Mismatch Details
- Submit Service Request (Refund Reissue / Condonation for delay in submission of ITR-V)
- Submit Grievances and view their status
- Download Prefilled data
- View Annual Information Statement/ 26AS (will be available later)
- View Notices (will be available later)
- Respond to Outstanding Tax Demand (will be available later)
In summary, adding a client is a safeguard for both the preparer and the client, ensuring authorized filing and secure handling of tax filer’s sensitive information.
