Unable to complete your ITR filing?
While submitting your Income Tax Return, you may see an error stating that your residential status has not been updated. This usually means that the residential status is missing from your profile on the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
Follow the steps below to update your residential status and continue filing your return through myITreturn.
Before you begin
Keep your Income Tax e-Filing portal login credentials ready. Make sure you select the residential status applicable to you for the relevant financial year.
Steps to Update Residential Status
Step 1: Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing Portal
Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal and log in using your PAN, password and the required verification details.
Step 2: Open Your Profile
After logging in, click the profile dropdown available in the top-right corner of the page. Select Edit Profile from the available options.
Step 3: Click the Edit Button
On the profile page, locate the relevant profile details section and click Edit.
Step 4: Select and Save Your Residential Status
Select the correct Residential Status from the available options. Review the information entered and click Save.

Residential status is determined separately for each financial year and is not based only on citizenship. Select the applicable status carefully before saving your profile.
Continue Filing on myITreturn
After saving the residential status, log out of the Income Tax e-Filing portal. Then visit myITreturn and sign in to your account.
On the dashboard, click Submit ITR Now to continue filing your Income Tax Return.

You can now proceed with your return filing. Review the information in your return carefully before confirming and submitting it.
What if the Error Continues?
If the residential-status error continues after completing the above steps, sign out of both portals and log in again. Confirm that the updated residential status is visible in your Income Tax e-Filing profile.
