Unable to complete your ITR filing?
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) authenticates an electronic filing and links it to the authorised signatory. On the Income-tax portal, the DSC must be valid, PAN-based where required and registered against the correct user or principal contact.
Who Must Use a DSC?
DSC verification is mandatory in specified cases, including:
- Companies filing their income-tax return.
- Political parties filing the applicable return.
- Taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited and whose return must be DSC-verified under the e-filing rules.
- Forms, reports, responses or proceedings for which the portal specifically requires a DSC.
Other taxpayers may generally use an available electronic-verification method where the relevant service permits it.
Registration is user-specific: A company’s DSC is normally registered through the PAN of its authorised principal contact. A certificate mapped to the wrong PAN or signatory will not work.
Prerequisites
- Active e-Filing account.
- Valid DSC issued by a licensed Certifying Authority.
- USB cryptographic token and its driver.
- Latest DSC Management Utility or emBridge utility from the official portal.
- Matching PAN and name details in the certificate and e-Filing profile.
How to Register a DSC
- Download and install the current DSC Management Utility from the portal’s Downloads section.
- Connect the USB token and ensure that its driver detects the certificate.
- Log in to the Income-tax e-Filing portal.
- Open My Profile and select Register DSC.
- Confirm the registered email ID where requested.
- Choose the certificate provider and certificate from the utility.
- Enter the token password and sign the registration request.
- Confirm that the portal displays successful registration.
Renewed certificate: A renewed or replaced DSC is a new certificate for portal purposes. Register it again even if the holder and PAN remain unchanged.
Using the DSC for Filing
- Prepare and validate the return, form or response.
- Select DSC as the verification method.
- Keep the utility running and USB token connected.
- Select the correct certificate, enter the token password and sign.
- Download the acknowledgement after successful submission.
Common Errors and Fixes
| Issue | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Certificate not visible | Reconnect the token, reinstall its driver and restart the DSC utility. |
| PAN mismatch | Confirm that the PAN embedded in the certificate matches the user or principal contact. |
| Expired certificate | Obtain a renewed DSC and register it again on the portal. |
| Utility connection error | Use the latest official utility, run it with required permissions and check firewall or browser restrictions. |
| Wrong signatory | Update the authorised signatory or principal contact before registering the DSC. |
| Incorrect token password | Use the token PIN supplied or reset through the certificate provider; repeated failures may lock the token. |
Security practice: Do not share the USB token, token password, portal password or OTP. Keep the certificate under the authorised signatory’s control.
