myITreturn account settings allow you to reset your login password, change your registered email address, and update the password used for the Income Tax Department portal.
Important: The two passwords are different.
- Your myITreturn password is used to sign in to myITreturn.
- Your ITD password is used for your account on incometax.gov.in.
- Updating one password does not automatically update the other.
Before You Begin
Keep the following information available:
- Registered email address or username;
- PAN associated with the tax-filer profile;
- Access to the registered email inbox; and
- Current Income Tax e-Filing portal password, where applicable.

How to Add or Update ITD Credentials in myITreturn
The ITD credential is the password used for your account on the official Income Tax e-Filing portal. It is separate from the password used to log in to myITreturn.
Step 1: Confirm That the ITD Password Is Working
Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal using your PAN and current password.
Step 2: Log In to myITreturn
Open myITreturn and sign in using your myITreturn account credentials.
Step 3: Open Account Settings
Click the account drop-down displayed in the top-right corner and select Settings.
Step 4: Open “Income-Tax Login”
Go to the Income-Tax Login tab.
Step 5: Select the Tax Filer
Select the relevant PAN or taxpayer name. This is particularly important where more than one member or tax-filer profile is maintained under the account.
Step 6: Enter the Current ITD Password
Enter the password currently used on incometax.gov.in in the field provided for the ITD or Income Tax Department password. Complete the on-screen update action.
What to Do After Changing the ITD Password
Important: When you change or reset the password directly on the Income Tax e-Filing portal, the old password saved in myITreturn may no longer work.
After changing it:
- Log in to myITreturn.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Income-Tax Login.
- Select the applicable PAN or taxpayer name.
- Replace the old ITD password with the new password.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing the two passwords
Do not enter the myITreturn password in the ITD password field. The two accounts use separate credentials.
Updating the ITD password but not myITreturn
After changing the password on incometax.gov.in, update it under Settings → Income-Tax Login in myITreturn.
Entering the wrong email address
Check the spelling of the new email address before submitting the change. An incorrect email address may prevent receipt of account communications or password-reset emails.
Conclusion
The Settings section of myITreturn can be used to manage the registered email address and the Income Tax Department login password. A forgotten myITreturn password can be reset from the sign-in page.
