How to file Return through Income-tax portal by uploading .json?

Follow these quick and easy steps to file your return.

First, you have to download the JSON file from your myITreturn login and then log in to incometax.gov.in and upload the JSON file. That's it and your return will be filed. Read a detailed step-wise process below.

Step 1: Sign in to myitreturn.com. Click here.

Step 2: Click on File your Income-tax Return and hover over your username reflected by the arrow to navigate to settings.

Step 3: On the Member's page click on your name

Step 4: Click on Download JSON

Now let us see how to upload this JSON file on the Income-tax portal -

Step 1: Go to https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal

Step 2: Click on Login

Step 3: Enter your User ID here to proceed further

Step 4: Enter the password for your e-Filing account

Step 5: Click on Skip

Step 6: Click on File Now

Step 7: Select your relevant Assessment Year (AY 2023-2024)

Step 8: You need to select the Offline mode of filing to proceed. If you are filing a return before the due date you are required to select filing type 139(1). If you are filing a revised return you need to select filing type as 139(5). Also, select your relevant ITR Type.

Step 9: Attach your downloaded .json file here

Step 11: Complete your verification if validation is successful

After the successful filing of the return, you will get an acknowledgement number. Update this acknowledgement number in myitreturn.com. Below are the steps to update the acknowledgement number -

Step 13: You will receive ITR V on your registered email. In ITR V you will get the acknowledgement number

You can get the acknowledgement number in your login on the IT portal

Click on View Filed Returns under the e-File tab

You will get an acknowledgement number under the relevant AY

Step 14: Copy this acknowledgement number and log in to myitreturn.com. On the dashboard, you will get an option to upload an acknowledgement number. 

Step 15: Update the acknowledgement number and submit
