Unable to complete your ITR filing?
To use ERI-enabled filing services through myITreturn, myITreturn’s registered e-Return Intermediary must be added as an active ERI against your PAN.
An e-Return Intermediary (ERI) is an intermediary authorised by the Income Tax Department to assist taxpayers with filing Income-tax Returns, statutory forms and certain related services.
This process has two parts: First, deactivate any other active ERI connected with your PAN. Then log in to myITreturn and approve the request to add myITreturn’s ERI.
Why Do You Need to Add myITreturn as an ERI?
Adding myITreturn’s ERI allows the platform to perform permitted filing-related services after receiving your consent.
The authorisation does not automatically file your return. You must still review your tax information, approve the filing and complete any required verification.
Existing ERI check: A taxpayer cannot generally be added as an active client of another ERI while already active with a different ERI. If another ERI appears under the Active tab, deactivate it before proceeding.
Details Required Before Adding the ERI
Keep the following information ready:
- Your PAN and Income Tax e-Filing portal password;
- Access to your registered mobile number and email address;
- Your myITreturn login details; and
- The OTP received for approving the ERI request.
Security reminder: Enter your password and OTP only on the official Income Tax portal or the secure myITreturn screen. Do not share your password, OTP, EVC or banking PIN with another person.
Part 1: Deactivate an Existing ERI
If no ERI is currently active against your PAN, skip this section and proceed to Part 2: Add myITreturn as Your ERI.
Step 1: Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing Portal
Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
Click Login, enter your PAN in the User ID field and click Continue.
Step 2: Enter Your e-Filing Password
Confirm the secure-access message displayed on the portal, select the required checkbox and enter your e-Filing password.
Click Continue to sign in.
If you do not remember your password, use the Forgot Password option to reset it.
Step 3: Open the My e-Return Intermediary Page
After logging in, go to:
Authorized Partners → My e-Return Intermediary
Step 4: Check the Active ERI List
Open the Active tab on the My e-Return Intermediary page.
- If the Active tab is blank, no ERI is currently active. Proceed to Part 2.
- If an ERI is displayed, click Deactivate against that ERI.
Step 5: Confirm ERI Deactivation
Review the ERI details and click Confirm to proceed with deactivation.
Step 6: Verify the Deactivation Confirmation
A success message will appear after the existing ERI is deactivated.
After receiving the confirmation, return to your myITreturn account to add myITreturn’s ERI.
Part 2: Add myITreturn as Your ERI
Step 1: Log in to myITreturn and Select Your Profile
Log in to your myITreturn account using your credentials.
Select the taxpayer profile for which you want to prepare or file the Income-tax Return.
Step 2: Request an OTP to Approve the ERI
You will be directed to the Home/Verify User page.
Click Request OTP. The OTP will be sent to the contact details registered for verification.
Step 3: Enter the OTP and Submit the Request
Enter the OTP received on your registered contact details and click Submit.
OTP issue: Check that your mobile number and email address are correctly registered on the Income Tax portal. If the OTP expires, request a new OTP and complete the verification again.
Step 4: Confirm That the ERI Has Been Added
After successful verification, a confirmation will appear stating that the ERI has been added successfully.
You can now return to the taxpayer dashboard and continue preparing or filing the Income-tax Return.

Common Issues While Adding an ERI
Another ERI Is Already Active
Deactivate the existing ERI through the My e-Return Intermediary page and then initiate the myITreturn ERI request again.
The OTP Has Not Been Received
Check the mobile number and email address registered on the Income Tax portal. Wait briefly, then use the option to request a new OTP.
The OTP Has Expired
Request a fresh OTP and enter it within the validity period displayed on the screen.
The ERI Request Was Not Completed
Initiate the verification again from myITreturn. An ERI request that is not approved within the permitted period may expire and need to be raised again.
The ERI Does Not Appear Under the Active Tab
Confirm that the OTP verification was completed successfully. You may also log out and sign in again before checking the Active ERI list.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an e-Return Intermediary?
An e-Return Intermediary is an intermediary authorised to provide specified Income-tax Return filing and related services to taxpayers.
Why must I deactivate my existing ERI?
A taxpayer who is already an active client of another ERI generally cannot be added as an active client of a different ERI. The existing ERI must therefore be deactivated before completing the new request.
Does adding myITreturn as an ERI automatically file my return?
No. The authorisation allows myITreturn to provide permitted filing services. You must still review, submit and verify the return separately.
Will I need to share my Income Tax password?
No. Do not share your Income Tax portal password, OTP, EVC or banking credentials with anyone.
Can I deactivate myITreturn’s ERI later?
Yes. You can manage, deactivate or remove an ERI through the My e-Return Intermediary service on the Income Tax portal.
