Unable to complete your ITR filing?
Form 16 is a Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) certificate issued by an employer for salary income. It contains salary, exemption, deduction and TDS information that can be used while preparing an Income Tax Return (ITR).
What does Form 16 contain?
- Part A: Employer and employee details, PAN/TAN, employment period and tax deducted and deposited.
- Part B: Salary breakup, exempt allowances, deductions and taxable salary calculation.
Important: Uploading Form 16 imports salary-related information, but you must still review the return and report any other income, deductions, taxes paid, bank accounts or disclosures applicable to you.
Before you begin
Keep the following information ready:
- Form 16 PDF received from each employer
- PAN and personal details of the taxpayer
- Bank account details for refund or tax-payment purposes
- Details of interest, house property, capital gains or any other income
- Details of deductions and taxes paid that are not reflected in Form 16
Part 1: Upload Form 16
Step 1: Open the Form 16 upload option
Visit myITreturn.com. Scroll to the Form 16 Upload card and click Start Now.
Step 2: Select your Form 16 PDF
Click Upload Form 16 PDF and select the Form 16 file provided by your employer.
Step 3: Confirm successful upload
After the file is uploaded and processed, a success message will appear. Review the message before proceeding.
Step 4: Log in or create an account
If you already have a myITreturn account, log in using your registered email ID and password. New users can sign up and create an account.
Step 5: Add the taxpayer
Enter the required details under Add Tax Filer. Ensure that the PAN and personal information belong to the person whose return is being prepared.
Step 6: Review the imported Form 16 details
Review the information imported from Form 16. Enter any missing mandatory details and click Continue.
Step 7: Review the imported summary
Check the imported salary and TDS summary carefully. If the information is correct, click Next.
Step 8: Verify and submit the imported details
Verify the displayed information and click Submit to add the Form 16 details to your return.
Step 9: Add another Form 16, if applicable
If you worked for more than one employer during the financial year, click Yes and upload the additional Form 16. If there is no other Form 16, click No.
Step 10: Continue with self-filing
Click Continue Self-Filing to review the remaining return information and complete the filing process.
Part 2: Complete and submit your Income Tax Return
Step 11: Review the filing summary
Review the summary displayed on the screen and click Continue to proceed.
Step 12: Select your residential status
Select the residential status applicable to you for the relevant financial year and click Way Forward.
Step 13: Add any remaining income or proceed to review
If all Form 16 details are uploaded and you have no additional income, deductions or disclosures to add, click Review and File. Otherwise, add the remaining information before proceeding.
Step 14: Complete your personal details
Review and complete your personal information. Click Save, and then select Bank Details.
Step 15: Add a bank account
Click Add Bank Details to enter the bank account that should be considered for refund or other return-related purposes.
Step 16: Enter and save the bank details
Enter the requested bank account information carefully and click Save.
Step 17: Confirm the primary bank account
Verify the saved bank details and ensure that the correct account is marked as the Primary Account. Then click Summary.
Step 18: Check the complete tax summary
Review the complete computation, including Gross Total Income, deductions, taxable income, total tax, TDS, taxes paid and the refund or tax payable amount.
Review before proceeding: Compare the imported salary and TDS details with your Form 16, Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement. Correct any missing or mismatched information before submission.
Step 19: Select the type of return
Select Yes (New / Original Return) only when you are filing the first return for the selected Assessment Year. If a return has already been filed, choose the appropriate revised or other return option shown on the screen.
Step 20: Continue with submission
Click Continue and proceed to filing with zero fees as we self-filing is absolutely free at myITreturn.com
Step 21: Download the acknowledgement and complete e-verification
After successful submission, note the acknowledgement number and download the ITR-V or acknowledgement for your records. Complete e-verification using an available verification method. Submission alone does not complete the filing process unless the return is verified within the applicable time limit.
Final checks before completing the filing
- Confirm that every employer's Form 16 has been uploaded.
- Report income that does not appear in Form 16.
- Verify deductions and tax-regime selection.
- Reconcile TDS and tax payments with Form 26AS and AIS.
- Check the selected return type and Assessment Year.
- Confirm the primary bank account and refund details.
- Complete e-verification after submitting the return.
