Introduction
Before preparing or filing an Income Tax Return through myITreturn, you must create or select the relevant tax-filer profile. The PAN must then be verified so that the taxpayer is registered as a client of myITreturn’s e-Return Intermediary.
The process has two stages:
- Create a member or tax-filer profile on myITreturn.
- Verify the PAN and authorise myITreturn as the taxpayer’s e-Return Intermediary.
Important: Client/PAN verification is different from e-verifying an Income Tax Return after filing. Client verification establishes the authority required for myITreturn to access permitted services and perform filing-related activities on behalf of the taxpayer.
What Is a Member or Tax Filer on myITreturn?
A member or tax filer is the individual whose tax information and Income Tax Return will be prepared through the myITreturn account.
One myITreturn login may contain more than one tax-filer profile. For example, you may add yourself and other family members as separate tax filers. Each tax filer must have their own PAN and personal details.
What Does “Verify PAN” or “Add Client” Mean?
PAN verification confirms the taxpayer’s details with the Income Tax Department and establishes the taxpayer as a client of myITreturn’s e-Return Intermediary.
An e-Return Intermediary, or ERI, is an authorised intermediary that can file Income Tax Returns and perform specified e-Filing activities on behalf of taxpayers. A taxpayer may add an ERI through the Income Tax e-Filing portal, or the ERI may send an add-client request after obtaining the taxpayer’s consent.
Keep These Details Ready
- The taxpayer’s PAN
- Name exactly as recorded against the PAN
- Date of birth as per PAN records
- Email address and mobile number
- Access to the email address and mobile number registered on the Income Tax e-Filing portal
- myITreturn login credentials
The PAN must be valid and active for the ERI verification process.
Step-by-Step Process to Register and Verify a PAN
Step 1: Sign In or Sign Up to myITreturn
Visit myITreturn and sign in using your registered credentials. New users must first create a myITreturn account.
You may sign in using the available login method, including your myITreturn credentials or another authentication option displayed on the login screen.
Step 2: Add or Select the Tax Filer
From the member dashboard:
- Click ADD to create a new tax-filer profile.
- Click Edit if the profile already exists but its details need correction.
- Click the taxpayer’s name if the correct profile has already been created.
Step 3: Enter the Tax Filer’s Details
Enter the personal details requested on the screen. Pay particular attention to:
- PAN
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Email address
- Mobile number
Check the details carefully: Enter the taxpayer’s name and date of birth exactly as recorded against the PAN. Differences in spelling, initials, surname order or date of birth may result in a validation error.
Review the information carefully before proceeding.
Step 4: Submit the Details for PAN Check
Click or tap Submit.
myITreturn will check the entered details against the information available with the Income Tax Department.
- If the details match, the system will allow you to proceed with the verification request.
- If the details do not match, an error may be displayed. Edit the relevant information and submit it again.
Skipping does not complete verification: The current flow may provide a Skip option, allowing you to postpone verification. Services requiring an active ERI-client relationship may remain unavailable until verification is completed.
Step 5: Request the Verification OTP
After the PAN details have been accepted, click or tap Request OTP.
This creates a request to register or activate the PAN as a client of myITreturn’s ERI.
Step 6: Enter the OTP
Enter the OTP received on the contact details registered with Aadhaar.
Security reminder: Do not share the OTP with anyone or enter it anywhere other than the authorised verification screen being used for the request.
Step 7: Submit the OTP
After entering the OTP, click or tap Verify, or the equivalent option shown on the screen.
A confirmation message should appear after successful verification. The Income Tax Department may also send a confirmation to the registered mobile number and email address.
Step 8: Check the Verification Status
Return to the myITreturn member dashboard and check the taxpayer’s profile.
A Verified indicator, verification icon or confirmation status should appear against the PAN after the process has been completed successfully.
Verification complete: You may now select the taxpayer’s name and continue with the applicable tax-filing service.
Why Is Client/PAN Verification Required?
Taxpayer Authorisation
Verification records the taxpayer’s consent for myITreturn’s ERI to perform permitted activities on the taxpayer’s behalf. An ERI request is completed only after the taxpayer verifies it.
Protection of Taxpayer Information
The OTP process helps confirm that the request is being approved by the taxpayer who has access to the contact details registered with the Income Tax Department. This reduces the risk of unauthorised access to personal and tax-related information.
Access to Filing Services
Depending on the services authorised, an ERI may assist with activities such as:
- Filing Income Tax Returns and forms
- Accessing permitted pre-filled information
- Viewing filed forms
- Submitting rectification or refund-related requests
- Performing other services made available under the ERI framework
The availability of a particular service may depend on the ERI type, taxpayer consent and the service permissions active on the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
Record of Consent
The process creates an electronic record of the taxpayer, ERI, requested service and verification transaction. This helps establish who was authorised to perform the relevant filing activity.
Common Verification Errors and Solutions
PAN, Name or Date of Birth Does Not Match
Check the information against the PAN records and correct:
- Spelling of the taxpayer’s name
- First, middle and last-name order
- Initials
- Date of birth
- PAN entered in the profile
Use the Edit or Retry option and submit the corrected details again.
OTP Was Not Received
Check whether:
- The registered mobile number has network connectivity.
- The message was moved to the spam or junk folder.
- The contact details registered on the e-Filing portal are current.
Use Resend OTP after the available waiting period.
OTP Has Expired
An OTP is generally valid for 15 minutes. Request a new OTP and enter the latest OTP received.
PAN Is Already Associated With Another ERI
If the system reports that the PAN is already linked with another ERI, log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal and review the existing ERI under:
Authorized Partners → My e-Return Intermediary
Deactivate or remove the earlier ERI where appropriate, and then initiate the verification process again.

Important Points to Remember
- A myITreturn login and a tax-filer profile are not the same as PAN verification.
- Creating a member does not automatically complete ERI authorisation.
- Enter the name and date of birth exactly as per PAN records.
- Keep access to the email address and mobile number registered on the e-Filing portal.
- Verification as an ERI client is different from e-verifying the filed Income Tax Return.
- Do not share an OTP outside the authorised verification screen.
- Complete an outstanding add-client request before it expires.
Conclusion
Registering and verifying a client/PAN on myITreturn involves creating or selecting the taxpayer’s profile, validating the PAN details and completing the OTP-based authorisation.
Once the PAN shows as verified, myITreturn’s ERI can provide the filing services permitted by the taxpayer and the Income Tax e-Filing portal. The taxpayer should still separately review, submit and e-verify the Income Tax Return wherever required.
